In early 2007, SIAC Butlers Steel and Italian heavy structural steelwork specialists formed a joint venture partnership to supply and install the structural steelwork forming the upper tier support structure and the roof support for the new 50,000 seat national rugby and football stadium.

In excess of 5000T of structural steelwork was supplied, fabricated and installed for the works.

The upper tier steelwork supports, approximately 2000Te’s was fabricated at the SIAC Butlers Steel facility in Portarlington Co. Laois. This structure mainly consisted of large plate box Girder (> 40T) sections as well as a proportion of beam / column construction.

The roof support steelwork, approximately 3000Te’s, was fabricated in Italy and transported to Ireland for installation. The roof construction is a “horseshoe” truss and was constructed on temporary supports that were later removed. The heaviest single lift was 155Te.

The project was completed on time by the Cimolai Spa / SIAC Butlers Steel JV. The stadium officially opened on May 14th 2010.
