Description

The design was carried out by Roughan & O’ Donovan – AECOM who were also the Employer's Representative. The Contractor retained some design responsibilities for the underpasses and retaining walls and engaged Consulting Engineers, O’Connor Sutton Cronin, to carry out this role.
The M1 is the one of the busiest inter-urban route in Ireland with over 50,000 vehicles per day using the motorway from Dublin to Belfast. The project required the on line widening of the existing motorway and the upgrade of the drainage, communications ducting and gantry signs whilst maintaining the existing traffic flows through the project.

In addition to the mainline works the Contract also involved the upgrade of the existing Lissenhall interchange to increase its traffic capacity by increasing the number of at grade freeflows and providing additional lanes for traffic.

The project scope included;
  4km motorway widening from 2 to 3 lanes
  Upgrade of Existing Lissenhall Interchange
  4 underpasses and over 1.2 km combined cycle / foot ways
  4 motorway gantry signs
  260 meters retaining walls
  Traffic Management for mainline and interchange upgrade works
  Installation of new MOVA traffic signal system
  8000 meters communications ducting
  17,000m3 pavement construction
  Upgrade of existing high mast lighting
